Exploring The Utilisation of Human Hair as a Bio-Additive for Reinforcement of Building Materials
Final Year Project
HAIR-CRETE: EXPLORATIONS IN THE FUNCTIONAL UTILISATION OF HUMAN HAIR IN SUSTAINABLE CONCRETE APPLICATIONS
The built environment is one of the biggest sources of waste material, with the production of concrete being a significant source of polluting CO2. Human hair was recognised as a functional bio-mechanical fibre, providing reinforcement to concrete, whilst reducing shrinkage, micro cracking and shattering.
The composite material developed, sees human hair being utilised in a block design, which features interlocking surfaces and internal geometries. This reduces overall material utilisation, whilst maintaining functional strength. Building on themes of biophilia and bio-mimicry, the finished material incorporates natural pigment. Done so, in the pursuit of creating future cities made from us, that also visually reflect the diversity in our constitution.
